Dave Hogan has been involved in yard haunting for over 40 years. His last major yard haunt before leaving his native Los Angeles was The Witch’s Castle in Studio City, Ca. It was located a few blocks from the famous Hallowed Haunting Grounds, and proved to be a Halloween favorite with over 1,500 guests each night of operation as well as being covered in local media and L.A. area “haunt guides”. Features included a cemetery with ground mist swirling amongst the eerily glowing graves, pneumatic pop-ups, animatronics, and a thunderstorm. Trick-or-treaters then proceeded to castle where the witch (whose make-up would mysteriously change at random) would conjure treats from her bubbling, flashing, and roaring cauldron. Nearly all the effects and set pieces at The Witches Castle were designed and created by Dave.
After moving to a rural area in Utah, Dave took a break from haunting, but not for long. He started doing haunts on a smaller scale because, well…once a haunter, always a haunter! Ten years after moving to Utah, Dave and his wife Cynthia settled in another rural area near Roanoke, Va. Still infected with “haunt fever”, Dave started doing another haunt less for the handful of available trick-or-treaters and more for the sheer pleasure of simply doing a haunt. Seeking a larger audience, Dave essentially took his haunt online by creating the Tombstone Tech channel on YouTube.
Tombstone Tech features a variety of videos including “Cheap Creeps”, a series of inexpensive and easy to build props and effects. Currently in development are new categories including “Tombstone Tales” which will be mini documentaries on Halloween-related topics.
